Celebrate Responsibly (with sunscreen)
You know those commercials where some beer maker tells you to “drink responsibly” while simultaneously telling you to drink a lot? Perhaps Coppertone should take a page from the Anheuser Busch playbook.
A photo taken yesterday during the NCAA champion Tar Heels’ visit to the White House shows a beaming Roy Williams standing next to the president, who’s holding up an Obama (No. 1) jersey. It’s a great moment for North Carolina, no doubt, but not so great for Williams, who appears to have been hitting the beach (or tanning bed) a little hard in the weeks since his team socked it to Michigan State in Detroit.
I can see it now: The Coppertone commercial starts with various shots of teams winning big games, trophies being hoisted, and players declaring they’re “going to Disney World.” Transition to old, white coaches laying out on beaches, basking in the warmth of their post-championship glow. The spot ends with this photo of a darker-than-dark Roy Williams next to a light-skinned black president, then it fades to black and the words “Celebrateresponsibly. Coppertone.”
It’d win awards.
